Old Houston Memorial

As both his parents had passed away his aunt Beatrice was listed as his next of kin. After the war Beatrice searched for the location of Houston's burial, sadly the location was lost. However, she had received a letter from his CO, in which he stated that Houston was buried near to a calvary at Bazentin. She identified the location of where the calvary had been and had a replacement made and dedicated it to Houston.

Over the years sadly the monument had fallen into disrepair and was in desperate need of some restoration. In 2023, The Cheshire Roll of Honour started a project to restore the memorial and to improve access to the site. After gaining permission from the mayor of Bazentin-le-Petit, Mr Jean-Luc Fourdinier, the project to raise funds started. The work on the memorial was carried out by Western Front Services Limited.

The old Houston Memorial

The groundwork was prepared over the winter 2024 with the wooden calvary transported to the UK for restoration. The oak to restore the Calvary was kindly donated by the Duke of Westminster's estate in Chester.

In the early summer of 2025, the groundwork was completed which included adding steps and a levelled area in front of a newly installed cairn. At the beginning of July,2025 the calvary was returned to the site fully restored.

On July 22, 2025, 109 years after Captain Wallace was killed in action near to the location of the Calvary a rededication service was held.
